Print scale drives everything
The most common mistake in drawing output is treating line weight as something you set by how the geometry looks on screen. It is not. A line weight is a physical thickness of ink on a sheet, so the only context that matters is the scale at which that sheet will print. A wall section read at one inch to the foot can carry bold, confident lines; the same content squeezed onto a small-scale key plan needs far finer weights or it turns into a smear of black.

CTB versus STB plot styles
How those weights actually reach paper depends on the plot style table. A CTB (colour-dependent) table maps printed appearance to each object's screen colour — red plots at one weight, blue at another. It is a legacy of decades when colour was the standard, and it is still everywhere. An STB (named) table instead assigns explicit named styles to objects regardless of colour, which is cleaner and more self-documenting but requires a more disciplined setup.

Neither is wrong, but a studio should commit to one and apply it consistently. Line weight is not decoration; it is information architecture. The heaviest lines mark what is cut — walls in plan, the profile of a section. Medium lines describe objects in view. The finest lines carry dimensions, hatching, and reference grids. When that hierarchy is consistent, a reader's eye lands on the right thing first and navigates the sheet without conscious effort. International standards bodies such as ISO publish line conventions precisely because this legibility is too important to leave to taste.

- Pick a small palette of weights — typically three to five — and resist adding more.
- Tie each weight to a meaning: cut, object, reference, dimension, hidden.
